Will for Heroes 2016

IMG_11461.jpg

IMG_1146 I spent yesterday at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad building as a volunteer at Wills for Heroes. In the morning I taught the basics of the law behind a will and probate administration to volunteer lawyers whose daily practice is in other areas of law. In the afternoon the group wrote wills, powers of attorney, and advance medical directives for over 40 first responders. It made me feel good to know our first responders are protected while their lives are on the line.

Reflecting back on the accomplishment also had me pondering the difference between filling out three legal binding documents in less than an hour and the service our firm provides to its clients. The estate plan provided to our clients with young families provides a trust to ensure all the children are given an equal opportunity to complete their education. The terms of the trust allow for stretch of retirement funds while allowing the trustee to manage the account.

Beneficiary designations are coordinated with trust provisions to ensure the testator's desires are accomplished. Powers of attorney add provisions for digital assets and qualification for Medical assistance. Wills are sent to Register's Office for safekeeping and medical directives are stored on-line for easy access if needed.

Wills for Heroes is a great program becasuse it provides a simple estate plan to those who often fail to plan. For those who want to provide complete protection for their family there is real benefit to seeing an attorney who provides a comprehensive estate plan that addresses all your family's needs.
