FAQ Friday: What happens to your email when you die?

On Friday, November 4th, Juliana Mann, answers the question, "What happens to your email when you are disabled or pass away? She gives an overview of estate planning options for digital assets.

The Google inactive account manager allows you to decide what to do with your account if you become disabled or pass away. This will kick in after a certain amount of inactivity that you set.

In one scenario, you give your spouse and grandchild access to your account once the inactivity has kicked in and in the second scenario the accounts will be deleted and no one gains access.

Make sure you are signed into your google account while reviewing the inactivity manager to start making your plan. The first decision is choosing the time frame before the plan kicks in between 3 months and 18 months.

You can add a phone number and alternate email address to confirm your inactivity. You can choose which google apps information you want to share and who with. They will be notified by phone and email and you can set-up an automated message.

In the first scenario we can let the representatives chosen make the decisions about what to do with your data. If we choose to change our mind and go with the second scenario then we can update if we want a larger buffer of time before having our account deleted.
